Narvacan, Ilocos Sur (September 13) -- A military chopper was reportedly burned after its safe emergency landing in a ricefieled in Barangay Nagrebcan, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur last Friday afternoon.
However, all the seven passengers including the pilot were safe as they alighted immediately after the chopper's safe landing in the ricefield.
According to Colonel Essel Soriano, Commander of the army's 503rd Brigade, the UH1H "Huey" helicopter of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) was on its way to a mission to help the soldiers in hot pursuit operations against escaping rebels involved in the encounter in the mountainous areas in Barangay Pila East, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur when an engine trouble occurred at about 2:45PM.
It was reported that while on flight, a smoke was observed trailing the said aircraft prompting the pilots to execute emergency landing on a rice field along Barangay Nagrebcan, Santa Lucia, Ilocos Sur.
The pilots and the crews together with personnel onboard safely dismounted the aircraft before it burst into flames. The aircraft burned down until most of its body parts melted due to the intense heat.
"The chopper's seven passengers managed to get out from it before the fire started," Soriano said.
"The chopper was on its way to help our troops in pursuing the rebels," he added.
Soriano clarified that the cause of fire that totally burned the chopper was not from the enemy gunfire.
"Our investigators are still on the process of determining the actual cause of the fire, however, the defect is not a result of enemy's gunfire or any else," he clarified. (PIA Ilocos Sur)Read more Aviation News http://www.pia.gov.ph/
