Australian Airline Qantas Finds More Engine Problems

CANBERRA, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Australian airline Qantas on Monday said it has found problems with more of its A380 jet engines overnight, dashing hopes of an early return to service, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

According to Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth, one engine on aircraft in Sydney of Australia and two from U.S. Los Angeles have been found with some problems and were taken off for closer inspection.

"There are some engines being subject to further tests, but in line with normal procedure," Wirth told ABC radio on Monday. "In Los Angeles, there are two other engines that have been removed and we've been inspecting those. But this is, actually, common practice. It's how you can make sure that you're doing the right investigation."

About 1300 passengers were immediately stranded by the fleet disruption, most of whom are stuck in Los Angeles.

Thousands more people would experience delays as the airline shuffled its fleet to cover the grounded A380s, Qantas spokesman Simon Rushton said.

The move came after two of the airline's A380 fleet was grounded in Singapore airport, because of a mid-air incident last week.

Qantas's reputation has taken a hit recently.

Steve Purvinis, the federal secretary of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, said he is concerned about the "general safety culture" in the airline.

He said there is serious concern about how much of Qantas's maintenance work is now carried out overseas.
