Saudi airline to join SkyTeam

Delta Air Lines Inc.’s SkyTeam alliance is headed for the Middle East.

Saudi Arabian Airlines, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, plans to join SkyTeam in 2012, Delta said. This will add 35 new destinations to the network, including Saudi Arabia's major hubs of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Saudi Arabian Airlines offers direct flights to Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States.

Saudi Arabian Airlines is now modernizing its infrastructure, restructuring its domestic and international network and buying new aircraft.

SkyTeam Chairman Leo van Wijk said: "Saudi Arabian Airlines is a significant player in the Middle East and covers a considerable part of the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. Its membership in SkyTeam will enable us to compete more efficiently within the region."

SkyTeam includes Aeroflot, Aeroméxico, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, China Southern, Czech Airlines, Delta (NYSE: DAL), Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, TAROM and Vietnam Airlines. China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, China Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Aerolineas Argentinas are also set to join.
