A U.S. aircraft carrier based in Japan on Saturday arrived in eastern Thailand for a five- day visit following its exercise in west Pacific Ocean.
This is the fourth port call for USS George Washington (GW) during its summer patrol and the first visit to Thailand since its arrival to the Seventh Fleet in 2008.
USS GW, the U.S. Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier has brought some 5,500 sailors, the largest ever, and dozens of military aircraft including F-16s to the southeast alliance to experience the country's culture.
USS GW arrived at the Laem Chabang port in Thailand's eastern province of Chonburi, some 200 km from the capital Bangkok, after wrapping up of its exercise Valiant Shield on Sept. 21.
The drill, one of a few unilateral exercises done by the U.S. military in the region, has brought some 20 vessels, including the USS GW, an amphibious assault ship, four guided-missile destroyers, four nuclear powered submarines, two guided-missile frigates, two minesweepers and one guided-missile cruiser, and some 10,000 sailors based in Japan, Guam, Hawaii and San Diego, said a press release by the U.S. Navy.
GW which operates from Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka in Yokosuka, Japan, is the flagship of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group which includes Carrier Air Wing 5, Destroy Squadron 15 and the guided missile cruisers USS Shiloh and USS Cowpens.
The ship with crew accommodation up to 6,250 and model aircraft embarked up to 80, is now on its summer patrol.
