Delta Baggage Handlers Vote No on Unions

By: TOM HAYNES/myfoxatlanta

ATLANTA - There was another big blow Thursday to organized labor as a majority of Delta baggage handlers voted against unionizing. The vote follows Delta flight attendants who voted the same way a couple of weeks ago.

There was the thought that some of the ground workers might vote to unionize, but so far that hasn't happened.

Baggage handlers dealt another blow to organized labor following Delta flight attendants, who also voted not to unionize.

The vote is a big deal for both Delta and the unions.

For Delta, it means the airline will continue to enjoy a direct relationship with yet another sector of its work force.

Since its founding, Delta has been a mostly non-union carrier. The Atlanta-based airline is the only U.S. carrier that is still mostly union-free.

For the unions, the vote is a significant loss.

Delta found itself facing unionization after it gobbled up unionized Northwest.

Votes for Delta customer service agents and stock clerks will finish later this month.

Southwest, which just bought AirTran, and will be huge in Atlanta, is a fully unionized carrier.
