Forty A380 engines to be replaced: Joyce

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce believes about 40 engines will need to be replaced on Airbus A380s super-jumbos worldwide.

Mr Joyce said about 14 engines were likely to be replaced in Qantas A380 fleet "but we are still working through with Rolls-Royce what the number will need to be".

Qantas was in daily dialogue with Rolls Royce to determine which engines need to be replaced, he said.

"We are hoping in the very near future to understand precisely (which) engines need to be replaced ... but we are still a few days away from that."

Rolls-Royce had not told Qantas or Airbus about running changes it had made to the Trent 900 engines used on A380s, Mr Joyce said.

"We and Airbus were not aware of it," he said.

"If this (engine modification) was significant and was known to be significant we would have liked to have known about it."

Immediately the airline was trying to source replacement new engines.

"We are looking at engines from the production line; engines that are either in Toulouse or Darby in the UK and we are looking to try to get those engines on to aircraft," he said.

While deliberations over engine options continued, Mr Joyce was unable to predict when the grounded super-jumbos would return to service.

Mr Joyce was speaking at Sydney Airport at the launch of Qantas' "next-generation" of domestic self-service check-in and a revamp of its lounge and inflight catering offerings.

■Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce cancelled its press conference scheduled at the Zhuhai air show in China, avoiding having to face awkward questions about the Trent 900 engine crisis.
