Rolls-Royce to take back engines from Airbus production line

Airbus confirmed Rolls would ship some engines from Airbus’s facilities in Toulouse as part of a process of replacing a faulty part in the Trent 900 engine used by Qantas, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.

Rolls declined to comment on whether it would incur any financial penalty by doing so, but Airbus will reportedly deliver 20 rather than 22 A380s this year. Supplying existing customers is Rolls’s priority.

Airbus said last week the Rolls engine failure may delay some deliveries to airline customers in 2011. The plane maker has already had difficulties getting the A380 up to full production rate, because of cost overruns, and does not expect to break even on the aircraft until 2015.
