AFP - The US Department of Justice on Tuesday said it had indicted three Japanese former airline executives on charges of fixing prices on cargo to and from the United States.
The department said Takao Fukuchi, a former president of JAL's cargo sales division, and Yoshio Kunugi and Naoshige Makino, ex-senior executives of Nippon Cargo Airlines, conspired to "suppress and eliminate competition" and now face prison time of up to 10 years if found guilty.
The indictment is just the latest development in a US probe that has ensnared 19 airlines from around the globe and 17 executives including the latest charges.
The accusations center on the late 1990s and early 2000s, when industry participants are accused of agreeing to fix cargo rates on scheduled flights.
Northwest Airlines, British Airways, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Qantas Airways and SAS Cargo Airlines are among the airlines accused.
More than 1.7 billion in fines have been imposed as a result of the investigation and four executives have been sent to prison. Charges are now pending against 13 others.
