Airlines Offer Free Onboard Shopping on SkyMall.com

Travelers on Gogo-equipped aircraft flown by AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, US Airways and United Airlines now can shop for free on SkyMall.com. More than 22,000 products from more than 30 retailers are featured on the SkyMall website.

For years, airline passengers have shopped in the air by flipping through the ubiquitous SkyMall magazine. SkyMall sells everything from electronic gadgets to pet products to wine.

The new online shopping service is available on nearly 850 aircraft.

For a limited time, customers who spend $125 or more on merchandise with SkyMall via Gogo will earn a free Gogo pass valid on any Gogo-equipped flight. To take advantage of the offer, visit www.SkyMall.com/freewifi on the ground or in the air.

With Gogo, airline passengers can shop from SkyMall; browse the web; access online music, games and podcasts; send and receive e-mail; and connect to virtual private networks. Gogo is powered by Aircell.

About 18 million copies of the quarterly in-flight SkyMall publication are placed each year in airplane seat pockets. The SkyMall catalog is seen by about 88 percent of all domestic air passengers annually.

Several airlines offer Wi-Fi service or are experimenting with it.

Until Dec. 9, Alaska Airlines had offered Gogo Wi-Fi service at no cost. Now, the service costs $4.95 per flight to, from and within Alaska. In the lower 48 states, the service is offered for $4.95 and up, based on the length of a flight and the device being used.

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines is rolling out Wi-Fi access across its fleet. The carrier’s Wi-Fi partner is Gogo competitor Row 44. Southwest is selling Internet access at an introductory rate of $5 per flight. It’s available once a plane flies above 10,000 feet.

Through Jan. 2, 2011, Google Chrome is sponsoring free Wi-Fi access through Gogo on domestic flights flown by AirTran, Delta and Virgin America. The free service is provided on more than 700 jets.
