
The resumption comes after a hiatus caused by problems with the superjumbo's Rolls-Royce engines. But the airline will continue to deploy alternate aircraft on certain flights to and from Sydney and Melbourne until December 16 to allow it to continue mandatory inspections designed to ensure the engines are safe to fly. Singapore said the inspections were not expected to affect schedules and that it would continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce and comply with European regulatory requirements to ensure the safe operation of its fleet.
THE Australian Transport Safety Bureau has extended the consultation period for proposed changes to transport safety investigations until January after a technical problem prevented it from receiving emails sent to the "regulation consultation" inbox. The ATSB wants to revise the detailed list of accident and incident reportable matters under the Transport Safety Investigations Regulations, 2003.
REGIONAL Express has set aside $200,000 in travel assistance for people from flood-affected areas in western NSW. AIRSERVICES Australia has begun work on a new $20 million technical services facility at Melbourne Airport designed for engineers, technicians and equipment required to maintain Australia's air navigation system. The new facility is part of a multi-million-dollar upgrade to aviation infrastructure at Melbourne Airport in a five-year, $900 million upgrade of Airservices Australia's infrastructure, communications, navigation and surveillance capabilities.
THE ACT Assembly this week passed a resolution strongly opposing the controversial housing development under Canberra Airport flight paths at South Tralee in NSW. The motion notes that Canberra Airport currently receives complaints and is subject to calls for a curfew from residents who are under the flight paths and twice as far away as residents would be in South Tralee.
QANTASLINK is launching Bombardier Q400 regional aircraft on its Blackall and Barcaldine routes in Queensland from early February. QantasLink executive manager Narendra Kumar said the Q400 aircraft would increase frequency from two to three services per week, as well as reduce flying time.
CATHAY Pacific has upped the premium travel ante with a new business class seat that will make its network debut on Hong Kong-Sydney Airbus A330 services in March. The new bed, unveiled this week in Hong Kong, is one of the longest and widest available on airlines and was developed after extensive consultation with passengers.
A LEASED Boeing 767-300F will allow Qantas Freight to increase its capacity across the Tasman by 40 per cent from February. The first plane in the group to sport Qantas freight livery replaces a smaller B767-200F and is being introduced in response to increased demand, executive manger Stephen Clearly said.
VIRGIN Blue is extending its reach into the Australian Football League via a sponsorship deal with the Gold Coast Suns. The airline was recently named as official carrier and partner of the AFL.
