Rolls-Royce lawyers skip Qantas court hearing

The airline's fleet has been plagued with problems over the past few months, with engine failures and mass groundings.

The worst incident occurred on November 4 when a Qantas A380 lost power to an engine mid-air, en route to Sydney.

Aviation investigations have since revealed potential faults with the Rolls-Royce engines installed on the plane.

Last week Qantas filed a statement of claim in the Federal Court to negotiate a commercial settlement with Rolls-Royce over lost earnings.

The airline says it will consider legal action if an agreement cannot be reached.

The judge said today it was difficult to grant an application by Rolls-Royce to suppress aspects of the claim because no legal representatives from the company have appeared in court.
