More misery has been heaped on travellers already hit with rising car fuel prices with the news that British Airways, now part of the International Airlines Group with Iberia, is to increase its fuel surcharge on long haul flights from Tuesday 08 February.
This rise comes less than two months after it increased surcharges on long and short haul flights blaming increased costs of airline fuel.
This time short haul flights escape the extra cost which will add hundreds of pounds to some flights.
BA have said that since the last increase there has been a substantial increase in the cost of oil, accompanied by a 14% increase in the price of jet fuel. It said that whilst small fluctuations can be absorbed into their costs such large increases have to be passed on to the traveller or the company would become unsustainable.
The increase means that the surcharge on flights over nine hours will rise to £88 each way on their World Traveller tariff and £106.50 each way on World Traveller Plus.
Long haul flights under those times will see an increase to £85.
Forecasts from the industry expected oil prices to stabilise this year at 15% under their 2010 peak but so far the outlook doesn’t look promising.
