SIA defends Airbus A380s

Singapore Airlines has defended its Airbus A380 jets after two recent incidents with the aircraft model.

A spokesman for the Changi-based carrier said that the A380 had actually seen one of the smoother introductions among new aircraft in its fleet. He also confirmed that mechanics and engineers were still investigating an apparently faulty rudder control issue that had forced an SIA A380 to remain grounded at Zurich Airport in Switzerland. He added that technical issues such as this were not uncommon, even among the older aircraft in the SIA fleet.

The ordeal in Zurich follows another event in which lavatory smoke detectors alerted pilots to the presence of a generator cable short onboard an A380 bound for Hong Kong just days ago.

The spokesman said that it should be noted that the A380 is the very first superjumbo jet and the first aircraft in quite some time sporting a clean sheet design. He said that for this reason it would continue to draw more attention when issues occur.

He said that the dispatch reliability of the A380 was comparable to that of any other aircraft currently in use and said that SIA would continue to work alongside Airbus to ensure the A380 is operating at its best possible level.
