Southwest, AirTran aim for 2011 merger

Southwest Airlines Co. and AirTran Airways are still trying to gain government approval to complete their merger.

Both airlines have received a second request for information from the U.S. Department of Justice, which is reviewing the merger to see if it will be given DOJ clearance. Such requests are customary for major merger deals.

Both parties said they are in the process of gathering information to meet the DOJ’s demands.

The transaction still has to be approved by AirTran shareholders and the DOJ. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2011 after all approvals have been granted.

Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE: LUV) announced plans to buy Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran (NYSE: AAI) earlier this year as a strategy to expand its footprint in the low-cost carrier market. A merger would combine the second-largest carrier at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, which is AirTran, with Mitchell's fourth-largest carrier.
