India gears up for biggest Aero India

India is gearing up for the biggest edition of the Aero India air show with nearly 700 exhibitors and 30 participating countries.

With various big-ticket deals for the Indian armed forces in the offing, all contenders are trying hard to woo the Indian defence players at the ninth edition of the Asia’s premier show Aero India taking place from February 9 to 13 at Bangalore.

Among the deals is the giant order for 126 combat jets worth $1.2 billion, apart from six mid-air refuelling tankers for $2 billion, 197 utility helicopters for $750 million, 22 attack choppers for $600 million and a fleet of trainer aircraft for the air force.

About 675 exhibitors are expected to participate in the biennial show to be held at Yelahanka air base, making it the biggest edition of the event so far.

Around 100 types of civilian and military aircraft would be on display compared with 67 in 2009. Civil and military aerospace manufacturers from 30 countries – including the US, Britain, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Ukraine and the Netherlands – will participate in the show.

The event will provide a platform for companies to not only network with the Indian industry but also to benefit from sharing of research and development expertise and pave the way for cooperation in different fields of military and civil aviation.

“We are a big market. Many of the (participating) countries are seeing the market not only in India, but also in the region. They come looking for business in the neighbourhood,” said RK Singh, secretary for defence production.

The flying displays will see some of the latest fighter planes, including Eurofighter Typhoons, Sweden’s Gripen, the French Dassault Rafael, Boeing’s F-16 Super Viper and Lockheed Martin’s F-18 Super Hornet, besides unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters.

A KPMG report – titled “Opportunities in the Indian defence sector” – predicts that by 2022, India will purchase defence equipment worth $100 billion. Keen to get a share in the market, all the global aviation majors have signed up to participate in Aero India. These include Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BAE Systems, EADS, Rosoboronexport, Gripen, Dassault and CAE, among others.

India’s premier military research institution, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and the Aeronautical Development Agency would also be present at the event. The indigenous supersonic light combat aircraft and light combat helicopter from India’s stable would be on display.

Since its inception in 1993, Aero India has grown in scope and has become one of the most sought-after fairs in Asia. Organised by the Ministry of Defence, the 2011 edition will be managed by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
