Free inflight access to Facebook offered in February

Seven U.S. domestic airlines have joined with

GoGo Inflight
to offer free Facebook access during the month of February. Participating carriers are Virgin AmericaDeltaAirTran, AmericanUS AirwaysUnited and Alaska Airlines. Passengers who want to access other internet sites other than Facebook will still be required to pay the going rate which ranges from $4.95 for short flights, up to $12.95 for longer ones.

GoGo is currently offered on more than 1,100 aircraft that fly more than 3,800 daily flights. It is also available on-board more than
5,000 private aircraft. While email is the most visited area according to GoGo, with Facebook being the #1 site accessed on the web.

The Facebook promotion is another way that GoGo is trying to stimulate increased use of its services on passenger aircraft. It has been estimated that between seven and 10 percent of passengers on wi-fi equipped aircraft utilize the service. There has been little marketing and many travelers are skeptical of the quality of the connection at 35,000 feet.

Speaking from experience, I can attest that the internet speed when I've logged on has been quite good. I've had much more of a problem being able to find a comfortable position for my laptop so that I can see the screen. Since mine is just an average size computer, I would say that the smaller the laptop the better you will enjoy the experience. I have on several occasions found it impossible to utilize the wi-fi service on the aircraft when the seat in front of me is reclined, even just half-way. As we all know, seat pitch on most aircraft in the economy section is rather tight.

Regardless, the free Facebook promotion with GoGo Inflight continues for the full month of February. It is certainly worth a try to check it out.
