Air New Zealand is apologising to anyone offended by the use in an advertisement of a phrase similar to the last signal heard by the crew in the Mt Erebus crash in 1979.
A print advertisement headed "Let's Party" includes the words "whoop whoop" at the bottom.
It has offended a woman whose father died in the Mt Erebus crash in Antarctica, as the last recorded message from the ground proximity warning system to the flight crew contained a "whoop whoop" warning sound, the New Zealand Herald reported.
"It definitely tugs at the heartstrings. The second you say that, you remember the last few seconds of the flight," said Jayne Holtham, whose father Brian was one of 257 killed in the crash.
Air NZ spokeswoman Tracy Mills said "whoop whoop" was a party phrase.
She said the airline apologised to anyone who took offence and it would be willing to discuss it further with families of the victims.
