Mao’s grandson confirms China building aircraft carrier

Apart from developing carrier-killer missiles and advanced nuclear submarines, China is building an military aircraft carrier as its territorial assertiveness and core areas of sovereign concerns grow. Global Times online, the web edition of the international version of China’s party mouthpiece People’s Daily Sep 14 said the confirmation was given by Maj Gen Mao Xinyu, the recently promoted grandson of China’s late chairman Mao Zedong.

"As a General, I was very interested in the development of the Second Artillery Corps and our Marine forces. I am glad to know that the marines are constructing the first military aircraft carrier," Mao junior, modern China’s youngest general ever, was quoted as saying.

The Economic Times online (India) Sep 14 cited US naval intelligence sources as having said that China was building two 50,000-60,000 ton aircraft carriers to be equipped with Russian SU-22 fighters. They are expected to be ready by 2015.

The report also cited US sources as saying China was almost ready to deploy its 1500-km range anti-ship, carrier killer missiles, capable of destroying aircraft carriers from a long distance.

China currently does not have an aircraft carrier despite building a strong navy with a host of warships and submarines.
