KANSAS City, Mo. (AP) — The largest tenant at the once bustling Kansas City aircraft overhaul base is packing up for good. The Kansas City Star reported that American Airlines wraps up work Friday at the base at Kansas City International Airport. The base employed nearly 6,000 people in the early 1970s, but the numbers had shrank over the years.
At the end, American Airlines had just 50 salaried employees and 400 union workers left. The focus on the last day was cleaning up and removing belongings. Ron Harp is an American maintenance facilities mechanic who was hired in 1977. He says it's "a sad day." Smaller companies, including Jet Midwest and Frontier Airlines, continue to use the city-owned overhaul base to perform some aircraft maintenance business.
