French military aircraft flying over the Sahel region

French military aircraft are flying "for some time" several Sahelian countries, while the five French kidnapped on Thursday in Niger are now in a mountainous area of north-eastern Mali, according to officials sources.

"For some time, the military planes fly over several countries of the Sahel, said Sunday a Malian security source. "True, we are aware," a Nigerian security source confirmed in Niamey, reached by telephone from Bamako.   According to various sources contacted by AFP, the French hostages would now be retained in the north-eastern Mali, in a mountainous desert, backed by Algeria. The five French, a Togolese and a Malagasy, mostly employees of French companies Areva and Satom, were abducted early Thursday in Arlit (1000 km north-east of Niamey), uranium mining site . Paris suspected a group of Al-Qaeda movement in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) to be associated with this new kidnapping, nearly two months after the announcement of the execution by AQIM of the French hostage Michel Germaneau.  France "will do everything to find the hostages, said Sunday the spokesman of the French government, Luc Chatel, asked about the possibility that France committed a military action to try to free them.
