DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A UAE-led investigation into the UPS B747-400 Model Aircraft that crashed in Dubai this month is now focusing on risks posed by freight carried aboard the plane after flight data recorder indicated smoke or fire was coming from areas where cargo is stored.
The Gulf country's General Civil Aviation Authority says flight data showed alarms had warned of fire or smoke in the three-year-old freighter's main deck and lower aft cargo compartment.
Thursday's statement says the cargo plane's pilots struggled to see their primary flight instrument displays as thick smoke filled the cockpit.
Investigators had previously pointed to visibility and communication problems in the September 3 crash.
The GCAA's head has said it appeared the B747-400 was mainly carrying electronic goods.
