Air Canada should rank ahead of Dubai base

Don Martin suggests that the dispute between Canada and the U.A.E. is a calamity for this country (Oct. 13).

Emirates Airlines is seeking landing rights in Calgary, Vancouver and more in Toronto so that it can carry Canadians from India and Pakistan for visits to their former homelands.

Dubai, virtually bankrupt from its extravagant building of luxury hotels and other developments, has cynically used this issue to deny our troops facilities that contributed to the protection of Afghanistan, a contribution that is important to the U.A.E., which offers no help in this war.

Canada has no need of U.A.E. oil and the base in Dubai is replaceable. We do have a need to ensure our own economic interests are protected -- including our national airline, Air Canada, which would lose valuable business if this concession was granted
