Qantas Airways Announces New Luggage Restrictions

For passengers using Qantas Airways, there has been some recent bad news announced by the airline. In light of this new news, the airline risks a backlash from its seven million frequent fliers as it plans to use new check in technology to crack down on checked in luggage.

The airline has distributed notices to all of its frequent fliers, over the past few days, to tell them that economy passengers will be able to take only one piece of complimentary luggage onboard starting June of next year. This one piece of luggage will be subjected to the same weight limit of 23kg.

Anyone that turns up to the airport with more than one bag will be forced to pay a $30 surcharge. Of course, this is not the only policy that will be changed. The check bag limit for Sliver, Gold and Platinum frequent fliers will be changed as well.

Some passengers, however, will still be allowed to take on two pieces of luggage. However, this only works for Sliver and Gold fliers traveling in business classes, as well as Platinum members in any class. Thus, this gives people even more reasons why they should upgrade to a Platinum membership.

One spokesman for the company did say that most of the weight restrictions do stay the same. Some have even been increased slightly.

Qantas has also given noticed of a raft of frequent flier fee increases. However, many of these could be avoided by using their website to book. Apparently there is a new $35 charge for using the airline’s call center to transfer frequent flier points to family members.
