New Boeing aircraft to double THY’s capacity

Following the addition of 12 Boeing 777-300ER Model Aircraft to its fleet, Turkish Airlines’ (THY) long distance flights look set to double, THY Chairman Hamdi Topçu said on Wednesday in Seattle.

Addressing reporters after taking delivery of the first of a 12-aircraft order from The Boeing Company in Seattle on Wednesday, Topçu said the new additions would lead to a sizeable increase in THY’s capacity.

The remaining order of Model Aircraft will be filled by August 2011.

The number of Boeing aircraft in THY’s fleet of 145 is 73, he said, while pointing out that Boeing’s share in the fleet would rise to 60 percent, if it could successfully deliver the remaining orders by August of next year.

Topçu said the THY delegation paid a visit to Boeing’s production facilities to see cutting edge developments in aviation technology on site, while conducting discussions on a variety of cargo carrying options.

Late last year, the aviation sector began to shakily recover from the severe economic slump caused by toxic loans in the US in 2008. Forecast losses were slashed, while demand increased.

THY was presently pulling in record numbers, as indicated by the rising number of new aircraft orders, Topçu said, and added that his company intended to further its already positive relations with Boeing through additional purchases. Vice President of Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes Marlin Dailey praised the recent successes of Turkey’s flagship carrier.
