Southwest Airlines today launched a winter fare sale, with round-trip flights ranging from $60-$240, depending on distance.
The three-day sale is good for travel in the first half of December, and from Jan. 4-Feb. 16, weak travel periods before and after Christmas. Tickets must be purchased by Thursday on southwest.com or swabiz.com. Sunday flights are excluded, making weekend getaways more expensive.
The Dallas-based airline, a dominant player in Phoenix with nearly 180 daily departures, is calling the sale its "$30-$60-$90-$120-sale," after the one-way fares. In June, the airline had a "$39-$79-$119 sale" for fall travel, but it excluded travel on Fridays and Sundays.
Under the current sale, destinations for $30 each way include Las Vegas, Southern California and Albuquerque. For $60 each way: Austin, Texas; Dallas; Denver; Reno, Nev.; and others. For $90: Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, Ore.; and Seattle. The $120 fare for East Coast cities includes Boston; Hartford, Conn.; Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia.
Other airlines are matching on competing routes.
