Tokyo Haneda airport goes international Sunday

Tokyo now has two international airports.

Tokyo Haneda will open its new international terminal and a fourth runway on Sunday, boosting its capacity by more than 35%. The $1.3 billion terminal is closer to central Tokyo — about half an hour by train — than the city's larger airport, Narita.

Several international carriers, including All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines, Delta airways and American airlines, plan to serve the airport. Earlier this year, Delta was awarded two flights, one each from Los Angeles and Detroit. American will fly daily from New York JFK. Hawaiian Airlines will link Honolulu.

Among the terminal's new features: a shopping area resembling a traditional Japanese village.

The Japanese government approved Haneda's international service expansion plans to stimulate the nation's travel and airline industries, which are facing greater competition from other Asian nations. Haneda is already Japan's busiest airport, with more 60 million passengers served last year.

New Orleans abandons plans to go private

New Orleans Louis Armstrong International airport has decided it will remain publicly owned.

The New Orleans Aviation Board voted last week to end efforts to raise money by selling a long-term lease to a private operator.

In 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration accepted the airport's preliminary application to participate in an agency pilot program to privatize up to five airports. An aviation authority selling the lease would receive a one-time windfall, but it would also give up control and recurring revenue.

The national travel downturn and the airport's ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 have made privatization difficult, aviation board Chairman Nolan Rollins said at a hearing last week.

Chicago Midway, which also applied to the pilot program, halted its privatization efforts last year after an investor group failed to raise enough money.

American Airlines to expand at Los Angeles

American Airlines plans a major expansion at its Los Angeles hub, saying it will add an additional 32 daily mainline and American Eagle flights to nine new destinations. American's expansion includes its previously announced route to Shanghai.

Beginning April 5, American will begin service between LAX and the following cities: Albuquerque (three daily flights), Boise (two), El Paso (two), Houston Intercontinental (three), Oklahoma City (one), Phoenix (four), Salt Lake City (three), Sacramento (four) and Tucson (three).

American also plans seven additional daily domestic flights from Los Angeles on existing routes, including two flights each to Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami, and one flight each to Chicago O'Hare, Las Vegas and Orlando. The airline says that "by spring 2011, American and American Eagle will offer 153 daily departures at LAX — a 28% increase from today's schedule."
