Small aircraft crashes at Lukla Airport

KATHMANDU: A small aircraft of Sita Air crashed at the Lukla Airport on the lap of Mt. Everest in Solukhumbu district while it was landing on Tuesday morning.

All 11 passengers and three crew members are safe, according to the airliner.

The front part of the Dornier-228 Model Aircraft that had taken off from Kathmandu, however, has been damaged.

According to the Sita Air, a team left for Lukla from Kathmandu to assess the damage and look into the cause of the incident.

One of the popular tourist destinations in the country, Lukla has a Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) airport at an altitude of 2,860 metres (9380 ft). Aviation experts consider the airport as the world's most dangerous.

In October 2004, a Yeti Airlines Twin Otter plane crashed at the airport in which 16 people including 14 foreign tourists were killed.
