U.S. airliner makes emergency landing in ’Peg

An American airliner was forced to land in Winnipeg on Monday afternoon.

The United Airlines Boeing 777 had to make the emergency stop at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport about 1:30 p.m. after the pilots reported smoke in the cockpit. The plane landed without incident and no one was injured.

Bound for Singapore

Winnipeg Airports Authority spokeswoman Christine Alongi said the flight originated in Chicago and was headed for Singapore before its detour.

She said a United Airlines crew was assessing the plane Monday afternoon.

“The airline is looking over the aircraft to determine whether or not it’s a faulty wire or what the case is and then decide what to do with the passengers,” Alongi said.

United Airlines could not be reached for comment.
