American Airlines seeks LA-Shanghai route

American Airlines is seeking government approval to operate flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai beginning next year.

The airline said Friday it applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to launch nonstop service April 5.

American says they would be the only nonstop L.A.-Shanghai flights operated by a U.S. airline. They would run between Los Angeles International Airport and Pudong International Airport.

AMR Corp.'s American Airlines currently flies from Chicago to Shanghai and Beijing.

The airline plans to use 247-seat Boeing 777 aircraft on the flights to and from Los Angeles. The planes have 16 first-class seats, 37 in business class and 194 in coach.
